Do you know I have lived by a rule for many years, which goes like this.
“Do what you love, and love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life’
And from this saying I have said on many occasions that you should do more of what you love, don’t spend your time doing things that make you unhappy.
If you’re spending time doing things that are not enjoyable, find a way to change this.
But one of the things that changes this, and questions everything we have been told about this rule , is this. Can you still get the things in life you desire, by only doing the things you enjoy?
And honestly the answer is probably not, take thee few minutes to explore the reason below.
So I talk a lot about WIT (Whatever It Takes) you can read about WIT in my previous articles and blogs, but ultimately WIT is saying, are you really prepared to do the things required to get to where you want to be?
And this is where the system starts to fail, you see if you are applying WIT to your life, then you will unfortunately have to do things that you don’t enjoy doing.
For example, do I really enjoy getting out of bed at 5:30am, I do it because it makes my day much more productive, but could quite happily turn over, hit the snooze and cuddle back up to my future wife.
Do I enjoy driving through rush hour traffic each morning, not at all. Do I enjoy queues, tax, pointless meetings, and flakey internet. Nope!
Do I enjoy picking up the phone and cold calling, or sending dozens of emails, writing articles, tweeting, scheduling updates across 15 gazillion social networks. Some of the things I quite enjoy, but for the most part I really dislike doing lots of them.
So when I say have we (I) got it all wrong, well that entirely depends on your goals in life. If you have big goals, and you’re prepared to apply WIT ‘Whatever It Takes’ to get to them, then unfortunately you will spend a large proposition of your time doing things that you don’t enjoy. But honestly, who cares if its taking you to the palace where you want to be, and this really relates back to an other article of mine. Understanding your ‘Why’. If the why is big enough, then the WIT becomes easy.
To this day, reflecting upon this, I probably spend half of my day, if not more doing the things I don’t enjoy doing. But that’s fine with me, I’m giving WIT to the things I do, and understand my WHY..
